Scenic View around the Study Area

Image
Skyline Rim View   The end of Ferron Sandstone, the San Rafel Swell is in the background.  The Henry Mountains  A beautiful volcanic mountain, whose peak is up to 13000 ft above sea level. The term Lacolith was introduced from studying of the Henrys. The Henry Mountains

Having Fun

This picture was taken in late May 2010. A yellow flow carpet can be seen at the background.

Interesting Geology Features in the Field

Sandstone Dike Picture shows a sandstone dike penetrating interbeded sandstone and mudstone at the Coalmine road cut of Tununk Shale close to San Rafeal Swell. In terms of sequence of events, the interbeded marine sandstone and mudstone were deposited, and then fracture was triggered by possible mechnism of earthquake, and them sandstone was poured into the fracture and at last the sandstone dike was deformed due to compaction.

Trace Fossils

Rosellia This picture is taken in summer 2011 at the highway 24 road cut of  Ferron Sandstone at Steamboat. Rosellia is commonly cylindrical, inclined burrow with an funnel shape opening. It is considered to be associated with proximal Cruziana ichnofacies.                                                               Chondrites Chondrites are root-like burrow system of regularly branching feeding tunnels of uniform diameter which never anastamose, interpenetrate, nor cut across on another. It is suggested they are feeding burrows and are common element of the Cruziana ichonfacies.                                                                  Rhizocorallium Rhizocorallium are straight to sinuous, horizontal, U-shaped spreiten-burrows. Dwelling/feeding burrows of a deposit feeder. It is believed to be associated with distal Cruziana ichonfacies.

The ant in the house we are staying in Hanksville 2011 summer

It is cute.

Dinosaur Bones in situ

Image
The dinosaur bones are discovered in a stacked channel belt in Morrison formation Jurassic. It is believed that the bones were rolling at the bottom of the channel due to higher density than water in a direction perpendicular to the flow.

Creatures seen in the field

Image
Black Widow The black widow was spotted by Janok on a trip to Dan Fix's study  area, where a tree trunk was also seen.                                                                       Rattlesnake On the second day of consortium field trip to coalmine wash, we encontered this guy who was obviously scared of a group of humanbeing. Fast shaking of its rattle at the tail making a loud and clear rattling noise.                                                                         Lizard Desert Flower

Wave Ripples  Wave ripples are characterized by symetrical profile to the wave crest. This is taken in July 13th 2011 in Eric's study area where Pa.6 is interpreted as wave influenced, fluival-dominated delta front deposits.                                                                2-D Current Ripple Picture was taken in Summiyah's area. Relative straight crests make them 2-D ripples. The asymetrical profile is diagnostic of current ripples.                                                                 3-D Current Ripples Picture was taken in Dan Fix's study area in Henry Wash. The sinous crests make them 3-D ripples.  Fluival channel and floodplain deposits are interpreted in the upper Ferron Sandstone.                                                     Current Ripple Cross Lamination Current ripple cross lamination shows a unidirectional dipping pattern, which indicates the paleoflow directio
